No matter how you choose to bust a move, our New York dance classes list has you covered.

Dancing

From tango to tap and everything in between, New York has it all when it comes to dancing. In a city this big, it’s not hard to find a place to get your groove on, but finding a place to learn how to do it may be something you want to spend a little time researching. New York being as big as it is, also happens to be home to dozens of dance schools, and navigating them all may prove difficult. We know you’d rather spend your time actually dancing than combing through a myriad of options, so we’ve combed through thousands of reviews on dance classes to bring you the following five top-rated NYC-based dance classes.

Ballet

Adult Group Beginner Ballet

Anna Griffin Dance
Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan

Anna Griffin came to NYC from Oregon with more than fifteen years of dance teaching experience under her belt. She continues to train with some of the best dancers in the city and performs, choreographs, and is even a faculty member at the Broadway Dance Center and Mark Morris Dance Group. In short, she knows what she’s doing, and her classes are some of the best in show. Her Adult Group Beginner Ballet class is geared for adults who are looking to get started learning ballet, introducing you to basics such as body placement and awareness, rhythm, and strengthening and lengthening your body. She teaches in a fun, relaxed environment and over the course of just four weeks will help you cross “learn ballet” off your bucket list. Students really love Anna’s patience and individual attention she gives to everyone in the class.

Samba

All Levels Latin Rhythm, Technique & Styling

Stepping Out Studios
Flatiron, Manhattan

Stepping Out Studios hosts a variety of dance classes and boasts claim to having taught or performed with or for a long list of A-list celebrities from Jennifer Lopez to Woody Allen. They’ve also worked on projects with some huge companies & TV shows such as Dancing With the Stars, Crate & Barrel, and the Today Show. No matter your dancing fix, they’re likely to have what you need and at a professional level. That being said, they offer a large array of beginners friendly classes, and their All Levels Latin Rhythm, Technique & Styling class can work for people across a wide spectrum of experience. In it, you’ll get a taste of a variety of Latin style dances such as the ChaCha, Rumba, Samba, Jive, and Paso Doble (a dance that plays off of the idea of the “dance” a matador & bull do). You’ll get some incredibly detailed descriptions about what you’re learning and the movements you’re making, all with patience and knowledgeable instructors.

Tap Dance

Tap Performance Ensemble

92nd Street Y
Upper East Side, Manhattan

If you don’t know the 92nd Street Y already, you should. Offering one of the broadest & diverse menus of classes and activities in the city, 92Y is a hot spot for fun and unique cultural experiences, arts, or even cooking. Though they do offer memberships which come with a host of benefits, you won’t need one to take their classes. Tap Performance Ensemble is for intermediate to advanced level tap dancers, though 92Y does sometimes also offer beginner tap dance classes. In the Performance Ensemble class, you’ll learn advanced tap techniques meant to prepare you for a full on tap performance. If you’ve got the basics down, this class should be just what you need to steal the show at the next party you attend, or make a few extra bucks hustling the subways of our beloved and artsy city.

Salsa

Colombian Salsa Level 1

Colombian Salsa Level 1
Midtown, Manhattan

At Piel Canela, Salsa is typically the name of the game. Though they have classes for a variety of things from Reggaeton to Bellydance, they teach a variety of Salsa forms such as On-2, On-1, Cuban, and of course, Colombian. With multiple classes running every day, you’ll have no problem going from mild to incredibly hot… on the dance floor, we mean. In Colombian Salsa, Piel Canela will teach you all the fundamentals of the salsa clubs originating from Cali, Colombia, a.k.a Cali Style Salsa. If when you think of Salsa you think big tricks and bigger lifts, this is the style for you, often frowned upon by Salsa traditionalists but one hell of a good time for people who like to really move. If you’re looking for the rebel’s Salsa dance class, look no further.

Tango

Tango Date and Class for Couples

Strictly Tango NYC
Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan

Specializing in authentic Argentine tango, Strictly Tango offers a variety of classes and workshops for those looking to get started with or brush up on their tango game, but also include milonga and waltz classes as part of their repertoire. They hold high the importance of individual attention and making each class a fun and exciting place to come to. In this class, it absolutely takes two to tango as it’s intended for couples to join. As opposed to a lot of other dance classes, you will strictly be dancing with whomever you bring instead of rotating partners, so it makes a great idea for date night. Absolute beginners will feel at home, but those who are more experienced will also get the chance to work on refining their moves. No matter your level, it’s sure to bring something unique to your romance, and maybe you’ll even find a new hobby to share!
