Low-Light Photography in Grand Central Terminal

Join us for this workshop, where we will explore the grandeur of Historic Grand Central Terminal and most importantly learn how to capture beautiful photos of the Beaux Arts interior using nothing but available light. We will be pulling permits for you to use tripods in the Terminal. Please note: GCT has now instituted a steep fee for permits to use tripods in Grand Central. This fee IS included in our workshop price. 

Being armed with the knowledge and a few tips, tricks, and techniques before you step out the door will go a long way when faced with a low-light situation. This class will finish outside with the opportunity to photograph the stunning exterior set against the midtown skyline (weather permitting).

Topics that will be covered include:

• Low-light photography challenges & how to overcome them
•  Camera settings for taking properly exposed low-light photographs
• Exposure bracketing, exposure compensation and HDR
• Solutions for white balancing when exposing multiple sources
• Practical hand-held and other stabilizing techniques for gaining additional "stops" of light
• Creating long-exposure images
• Advanced composition techniques
• Using available light as a tool to aid in composition
• Panning-motion blur & selective focus
• And much more!

Ample time will be given to practice learned techniques and photograph this iconic landmark

With more and more locations banning tripods and external flashes due to safety and security concerns, now more than ever, it’s imperative to know the proper techniques. methods and equipment for shooting perfect low-light photos.

Requirements: 

• A DSLR camera. You MUST know the manual settings of your camera and be familiar with ISO, aperture and shutter speed adjustments. 
• You must also stay within the group unless Jim has directed you to split up for photographic opportunities. 
• You must also carry your designated permit with you at all times.

Optional Equipment: 

• A speedlight, shutter remote, and a tripod or monopod are STRONGLY RECOMMENDED but are not required for this workshop.
