Migration workshops combine traditional manuscript critique with Fledgling’s signature generative approach, meaning plenty of in class writing time and feedback. With a focus on short memoir, we’ll spend the first three sessions writing to prompts and learning how to choose what belongs in a piece about one’s self, what a three act structure is and how to make it work for any length piece, and what mixing “big and little voice” means, plus so much more! In our final two sessions, each writer will be the focus of a half-hour manuscript critique on up to ten pages of their short memoir. (All writers will receive Sammi’s in text notes and a 1-2 page letter of overall thoughts). Come with the inkling of an idea, a subject or time of your life you’d like to explore, or to begin a chapter of a larger project.
With a cap of five participants, this course ensures an intimate atmosphere and individual attention on each writer’s story. Whether for publication or pleasure, you’ll come away with an original short memoir to be proud of and a toolkit for writing about true events in the future.
Schedule:
April 12 - Writing the self & mining for what’s important
April 19 - The three act structure
April 26 - Big/Little Voice
(reading and writing break)
May 10 - Manuscript critique for three writers
(reading and writing break)
May 24 - Manuscript critique for two writers + course conclusion

End your day with a creative release
Unlike other workshops that require a finished manuscript when you walk in the door, Fledgling is for the writer who isn't sure what to write yet. Fledgling is for the tired 9-5er who lost track of her creative spark. Fledgling is for those afraid of being mocked...
