In this beginning level jewelry making class, learn the basic techniques of metalsmithing. During the eight week course you will create a minimum of four professionally finished projects (for example, rings, earrings, pendants or bracelets) in sterling silver while learning layout, sawing, forging, texturing, filing, polishing, soldering, and basic stone setting. You will learn the correct way to build a heavy bezel setting, and to set the stone in your heavy bezel with a hammer and punch.
Bezel wire is NEVER used at Jewelryclassdc, all bezels are handmade, and heavy.
Learn the proper tool techniques and safety practices which will allow you to express yourself artistically in metal.
Beginning students receive precise direction but are provided with the opportunity to utilize their creativity. You will be introduced to all the wonderful tools in a modern goldsmithing studio and each week’s session will increase your tool skills and knowledge.
Students should not wear loose clothing and should be able to tie their hair back.
Masks will be worn during sessions, if you do not have a mask one will be provided. Gloves will be worn when using common equipment. If you do not have gloves a pair will be provided. Benches have been spaced out, with plexiglass installed, and the studio will be cleaned after each session. Demos will be shown on a big screen.
